The Construction Financial Management Association offers exclusive education, networking, and training for a diverse set of contractors. Since 1981, CFMA has grown to exceed 8,300 members with 99 chapters across the United States.
Jessica Moeller is President of the Orange County Chapter. We sat down with her to hear about her own experience as a CFMA member and leader within the organization.
Stepping in to make a difference
Construction Financial Managers have various responsibilities, including risk management, insurance, bonding, and project management. Jessica’s familiarity with the demands of the industry led her to seeking out a way to foster new connections and learn about popular topics that would make a difference in her role as the Chief Accounting Officer with her company, Casco Contractors. Knowing that CFMA is the premier organization for professionals in construction finance, Jessica decided to pursue a membership
After spending a little time as a member, Jessica realized that her passion for construction and experience in the industry meant that she could make a difference as well, leading her to join the board of directors. “I love construction, and being part of CFMA keeps me on my toes and engaged,” she tells us. “I wanted to be involved and be able to help with the chapter to get educational content rolling. As a leader in my own company, I know a lot of good can be done.”
Last year, Jessica stepped in full swing as the president and is making strides in the Orange County Chapter, despite a global pandemic. “Currently, we have 170 members, but we’re excited about bringing people together again and promoting engagement.”
Keeping business fresh and exciting
CFMA hosts a breadth of opportunities for members to get involved and meet new people as a whole, but within each chapter lies unique chances to do so with professionals in your specific area. Members around Orange County can take advantage of Construction Financial Officer round-tables to discuss hot-topics in the industry. The content at each round-table circulates as well, so a variety of themes are touched on. Jessica says, “We’ve discussed PPP loans, employer retention credits, and even how to bring business back after the pandemic.”
Similarly, each year kicks off with a “tool-kit,” Jessica calls it. “It has a little bit of everything–highlights of new laws, HR laws, bonding and insurance, industry benchmarks, economic updates, etc. People get a little taste of everything. It’s very popular.”
Although local events are in constant rotation, there are virtual benefits that members can access anytime. “The Connection Cafe within the member portal is one example,” she says. “People can ask questions within the forum, post job listings, or seek help with software.” On the same coin, members can receive help with the CCIFP (Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional) certification through study groups.
Picking up where we left off
In 2020, we were all faced with a global pandemic, which caused most of the world to shut down. But like many of us, Jessica is eager to pick things up again. “We host an annual new member breakfast for members to get acquainted with the board members,” Jessica explains. “A member appreciation event, likely at a brewery, is coming up. We also plan social events at Duck’s games, trivia nights, etc.”
Jessica also mentioned the annual golf tournament, to be hosted on October 21st, 2021. “I’m excited to help grow the Orange County chapter. We always want to reach more people and give them opportunities to network with other professionals.”
Getting involved is easy
The Construction Financial Management Association is the premier organization for all Construction Financial Professionals. Your membership opens the door to professional development opportunities, fresh connections, and hot topics that will bring excitement to your role. “It’s not only about education, but about meeting people and growing in your relationships,” Jessica says.
